Caius Marius, (157-86 BC), Julius Caesar’s uncle by marriage, sentenced to death by the magistrate Minturnae, the city where he had been captured in the events of the civil war. The execution was suspended when the executioner felt unable to perform the fatal blow claiming Marius’ very shadow had intervened with a warning not to kill Marius. (Cf. Plutarch)
