Hercules, the son of →Zeus and the mortal Alcmene was punished by Hera (the jealous wife of his father), to suffer a fit of madness in which he killed his wife and children. The Delphic oracle declared he sould enter the service of King Eurystheus of Tiryns in which he eventually performed a number of mythical deeds which immortalised his more than human powers.
