William, Prince of Orange, b 14 Nov. 1650, d. 8 March 1702, Dutch aristocrat, married to an English princess and effectively the most powerful man of the republic in the 1670s – organised the military resistance against France, became King of England and Ireland on 13 Febr. 1689, King of Scots on 11 Apr. 1689 in the events of the Glorious Revolution.
