I was born in the Year 1632 — an opening by which Crusoe must have reached his 87th year at the moment of the publication. He does not claim to have written the book much earlier; on the contrary: he will confess to be a man of good health and quarrel with his critics in his preface to volume iii in 1720; and he promises his further work on these his memoirs at the end of this volume → p.364.
