The value of the louis d'or, issued from the reform of 1640/41 to 1793, fluctuated (for most of the time) between 10 and 30 livres. Foreign traders accepted the coin at divers rates following their own changing perspectives on the value of gold and the quality of the coin. See Newton's Assessment of

Scots Money
The orginal value of the merk minted in the reign of Charles II was 13s 4d; in 1681 it was raised to 14s (the 4 merk piece rose accordingly from 53s 4d to 56s). Gold pistoles were only minted in 1701. Shillings circulated in coins of 5s, 10s, 20s, 40s, and 60s.
