Author

Preface after Belegarde, text anonymous. The 20th century critical discussion often attributed the text to Delariver Manley (the 1711-edition,link published "by Way of Appendix to the New Atalantis" seemed to state this - see, however, Deliarivier Manley's own words in Atalantis, pt.2 (1709),link and in her Rivella (1714).link Style und narrator's tone much rather imply a male author with distinctive cynism. Cf. also P. Köster (1971), p.x.

Remarks

Preface about "Romances", "Little Histories", "little Pieces", "Historical Novels". - With the help of her mother Zarah [Sarah Jennings], tricks Hippolito [Marlborough] into marriage. As confidante of Albania [the future Queen Anne] Zarah and her husband seize the kingdom's power. The beginning offers much prudence used in intrigues and a narrator relishing in commenting on the story. Politics [from the 1680s to 1705] become the most important theme, 2: p.99-132: satirical "Digression" on humane society, the qualities of politicians and courtiers, the roles of husbands and wifes and the connections of esprit, judgement and taste in paintings, music, women and dishes, with nature, social status and education. Merciless narrator quite in line with the cynism of his "Digressions". The French editions offer a valuable
