During the Spanish War of Succession, Portugal became an ally of England and so an enemy of France. As a result, French ships tried twice to invade Rio de Janeiro, once in 1710 and, more successfully, in 1711, when, under René Duguay-Trouin, 6000 men in 17 ships stayed two months, looting the city and spreading fear and destruction among the local population. Finally General Antônio de Albuquerque Coelho repelled the invaders.
