Pistole is the French name given to the Spanish gold dublone minted from 1516-1772 at the value of two Escudos [6.4564/ 5.9184 g Au]. The popular coin's name became applicable to all European coins imitating the Spanish original - beginning with the Louis d'Or of Louis XIII of France - leading to the Scottish pistoles.
