Les mille et une Nuits: Contes arabes. [...] Trad. en francois par Galland (Paris: Barbin, 1704).

History of Publication

Arabian Original: Alf laila wa-laila, translated into French by Antoine de Galland - and translated from the French into English and German. Individual volumes were reprinted as soon as they were sold out - the first volumes thus ran into higher editions. Booksellers sold whole sets comprising of individual volumes just as they had them on stock.

English editions: W. H. McBurney assumed that each individual titlepage he saw stood for a complete edition of all the volumes existing at the time - and thus got a problem of numerous lost volumes. The likely solution is, however, that the publisher only produced new editions of the individual one- or two-volume-set, which had just been sold out. The customers could thus always get the set with the number of volumes published so far. The individual volumes showed, when bound together, individual dates of publication and different edition-counts. The last four volumes - 9-12 - seem to have been printed late in 1721 again in order to be sold in couples, so that volumes 9 and 11 gave the title pages of each of the two sets. The publisher obviously decided to give these two top title pages the imprint for 1722, so that the edition of all the four volumes would not look outdated too soon.

German editions followed again the French. Some volumes were sold in couples, all sets or singles ran into new editions whenever they sold out. Talander's name adorns the titlepages. The famous author wrote, however, only the preface which was reprinted again and again.

The first two volumes of the German text appeared also in a piracy edition for which Marteau's Publishing House signed responsible. The one existing copy {3: AB:42.15/k,6} is, however, mutilated - the imprint's date is missing. The text follows pts. 1-2 of the Gleditsch and Weidmann edition as it was printed till it was newly set in 1717 (pp.1-484 even copy type-set irregularities). The engraved title page, however, follows vols. 5-6 (1711). 1712 will be a likely publication date. Though pirated the edition received two new new prefaces no.1 following the French original no.2 giving the translator's considerations "Vorrede des dt. Übersetzers" - both additions and the announcement to offer new parts as soon as they would come out might have been designed to make this edition look older than the one with Talander's preface:

The title was extremely influential - creating an overall interest in Arabian fiction and a new market for information about the Turks and Persians in particular. The Histoire de la sultane de Perse et des vizirs, contes Turcs (1707) (E.) were published in English with William Kings translation (H.) of (F.), Les mille et un jours (1710).

Les mille et un jours contes Persans by François Petis de la Croix, fils, (F.) are an imitation. Two English translations appeared in 1714 - Ambrose Philips (G.) came out earlier. William King (H.) conceded this in his preface (1: p.A2v). His edition was supplemeted by a translation of Histoire de la sultane de Perse et des vizirs, contes Turcs (1707).
